The “Read later” feature will be available for the desktop version of Chrome …

by ace

Soon, users of the desktop version of Chrome will be able to take advantage of a useful feature that has been available to iOS users for years. Currently in test preview, the “Read later” feature will allow you to save articles or guides to facilitate later access.

The feature is very similar to the options already found in Microsoft Edge and Firefox, and will help eliminate the need to keep dozens, scores, or even hundreds of tabs open so you can – perhaps – refer to something that caught your eye.

References to rescuing guides were identified in the Chromium Gerrit, where there is a commit called “Add flag for the Read Later resource”. Take a look at the optional flags in the Canary version of Chrome 86 by visiting chrome: // flags and there is a so-called “Read later”.

The flag description explains that the option “will allow users to save guides for later. Enables a new button and menu to access the saved tabs for later ”. Here, Google also makes it clear that the feature will reach all desktop platforms – namely, macOS, Windows, Linux and Chrome OS.

Save for a rainy day

Although the flag can be seen in Chrome Canary, it still doesn’t seem to be working – even when enabled, neither the button nor the menu that Google refers to is currently visible.

Clearly, this is a feature that is still in the early stages of development, and Google’s developers believe that it is not ready enough. It is difficult to say when we will enjoy Reading later, but it is something that will be welcomed by those who drown in tabs or lose sites in a sea of favorites.

In addition to offering a way to book something for later reference, so you don’t get distracted from your current task, it will also be a great way to organize research guides.
